A study conducted by the University of Texas Southwestern says that it is time to start exercising if you feel sleepy during the day inspite of getting a good night`s sleep. The study also says that a workout can reduce daytime sleep disorder in depressed people. The paper was published in the journal Translational Psychiatry.

According to researchers, Hypersomnia (too much sleep), as well as insomnia (lack of sleep), had been linked in the development, treatment, and recurrence of depression, adding that sleep disturbances are also some of the most persistent symptoms in depression.... Identifying these biomarkers, combined with new understanding of the important role of exercise in reducing hypersomnia, had potential implications in the treatment of major depressive disorder... Identification of biomarkers that uniquely predicted or correlated with improvements in hypersomnia and insomnia was an important step towards more effective treatment of (Major depressive disorder) MDD.

The study was conducted on more than 100 individuals aged between 18 to 70. They all suffered from Major Depression Disorder, and were participants in the Treatment with Exercise Augmentation for Depressions (TREAD) study. Blood samples were collected and studied. The scientists identified biomarkers based on the samples. The participants were also given two types of aerobic exercise.
