Cameras in smartphones have got multiple purpose of use. It helps share pictures instantly and save memories as selfies and other clicks, and to share with friends on social media platforms. However, here is a new dimension as said by the doctors. They say smartphones are highly helpful in diagnosing and detecting eye ailments.

Several eye conditions can be detected with the help of smartphones the use of which in the medical industry involves various techniques. However, physicians say studies made on its use in this segment is meager. Say for instance, accuracy is a vital factor when it comes to diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Mohan`s Diabetes Specialities Centre has been involved in studying the use of device called `Fundus on Phone Camera` to screen patients who have got the condition.

Color photos of the fundus (interior of the eye) was taken using a new device during their latest study. This was then validated against photos taken of retina that were taken using conventional retinal camera. In this way, the device is helpful in detecting a number of diseases on the fundus including that of diabetic retinopathy, says V. Mohan, founder, Dr. Mohan`s Diabetes Specialities Centre.

Comparing the cost of traditional camera and these, the cost of these cameras is one tenth of the conventionally used ones. And these are also easy to use even by untrained professionals.

The doctor adds that these cheaper and smaller devices will be of great help in screening more number of patients who pop up with diabetes related eye diseases. Patients who have type 2 diabetes need to get their vision checked annually.
