Why Should You Give up Coffee at Night?

According to a new study, caffeine consumption at night will delay human circadian clock by 40 minutes. The study was led by the University of Colorado Boulder and the Medical Research Council`s Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. This study is first of its kind. It shows that caffeine consumption in the evening hours of the day will delay internal circadian clock which prompts when to go to bed and when to wakeup.

Consuming the amount of caffeine as equivalent to the amount present in double espresso about three hours prior your bedtime will bring forth a delay of 40 minutes in the phase of 24-hour human biological clock.

This study is the first of its kind in describing the influence of caffeine – widely consumed psychoactive drug - on the human circadian clock, says researcher Kenneth Wright. He also adds that this study provides a new and exciting insight on how caffeine has its effect on human physiology.

Results obtained from the study may be of help for the travelers. Wright adds that properly timed caffeine will be of help for those who intend to shift the circadian clock when they need to fly west in varied time zones. The research studies were published online in Science Translational Medicine.
