A new study published in the journal BMC Medicine says that consuming coffee does not increase the risk of irregular heartbeat called arterial fibrillation (AF). This kind of heartbeat is common in those that ay suffer a stroke or heart failure and all cause mortality. The study was conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.

In the largest study of its kind, researchers used meta analysis of four other studies for 12 years. The entire study involved almost 2,50,000 participants. A researcher said, This is the largest prospective study to date on the association between coffee consumption and risk of atrial fibrillation, We find no evidence that high consumption of coffee increases the risk of atrial fibrillation. This is important because it shows that people who like coffee can safely continue to consume it, at least in moderation, without the risk of developing this condition.

The participants in the study consisted of 41,881 men and 34,594 women. The study started in 1997. The participants were asked how many cups of coffee they drank in a day (the median daily was 3 cups) and the consumption rates were followed over 12 years. The study found that there was no connection between AF and the coffee consumption. The researchers then conducted a follow up meta analysis. AF was diagnosed in a total of 10,406 participants out of the total of 248, 910.
