A new study claims that workers who have an emotional attachment with their work do better in their psychological well-being. The researchers also add that increasing Affective Organizational Commitment (AOC) will make the workforce happier and healthier which will in turn contribute to bringing down employee turnover.
What is AOC?
AOC - Affective Organizational Commitment is the emotional attachment shared by the employee with his work and the involvement shown towards the organization. The study was performed by Thomas Clausen of the Danish National Research Centre. It involved studying the influence of AOC on the well-being and health related outcomes in over 500 Danish elder-care workers who were organized in 300 work groups.
Those with higher AOC were found to have better well-being. and lower sickness absence rate and enjoyed good sleep.
Earlier studies claim that there is a strong relation between the emotional attachment towards work which influences absenteeism and other outcomes in the organization. According to this new study, group-level AOC is a key factor in predicting employee well-being in the contemporary healthcare organizations. High levels of AOC can act as emotional contagion which has its effect on the individual level well-being that are in no way related to level of AOC of the individual, say researchers.
