Scientists say a new device is here to detect diabetes in a jiffy. This new device need to be integrated with a smartphone and requires placing the saliva sample for a few seconds.

The possible risk of type-2 diabetes in the saliva can be of help for people from low income populations, say researchers

They add that this device eliminates the need for using needles. This being adaptive to smartphones, it gives instant results which is yet another feature.

This device can also be described as a cartridge that can get itself adapted to mobile phones. This will record any presence of compound (one which indicates incidence of diabetes) in the saliva.

This is really simple just like a pregnancy test where a specific marker shows being pregnant or not in just a few seconds, says Dr Marco Antonio Rite Palomares from Tec de Monterrey, the project coordinator (Mexican University).

We intended to design a device that can identify a biomarker using a simple saliva test, and give out fluorescent light which can be recorded by the cell phone, says Dr Palomares.

This micro device which can be integrated with mobile phone was developed by multidisciplinary team from Tec de Monterrey and University of Houston. With this, the patient can place the saliva sample using which results are obtained in software.

The resolution for getting the patient better each and every year is achieved by using the camera phone for detecting the maker in saliva.
