India in top 5 in list of deaths due to pneumonia and diarrhoea in children

According to a report published by the International Vaccine Access Centre (IVAC) at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, India has logged the highest number of children deaths in the world due to pneumonia and diarrhoea. This is the second year in a row that India is at number 1 on this list. 2,97,114 children under the age of five have died in the last year. Other countries in the list include Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. 

The result comes in spite of drives undertaken for the vaccination and prevention of thee two disease. Parameters for progress include vaccination, exclusive breastfeeding, access to health care, antibiotics use, zinc intake and rehydration orally. Apart from India, the countries that top the list are Nigeria, China and Indonesia.
