Its a brand new year, and a great opportunity to set your priorities right as far as health and fitness are concerned. Here are a few tips and suggestions to get you on the road to fitness.
First and foremost, exercise is mandatory. However, the body will benefit completely from the exercise only when it is complemented with a proper diet. Weight loss achieved with this combination is more likely to be sustained for a longer period of time. Exercise triggers the release of chemicals in the brain called endorphins. These chemicals make you happier, calmer and more clear headed. When you decide to start exercising, choose something that you enjoy doing. You could hit the gym, join a dance class, do yoga or pursue a sport that you love. Making exercise fun is what will help you continue to do it.
Planning your diet is a critical point. Plan all your activities and food well in advance. Shop for the right foods. Make sure to add fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, green pepper, leafy green veggies, kiwi, broccoli and strawberries are all rich in Vitamin C, among other things. Opt for whole grains like oats, barley, white rice and whole wheat. Include pulses, nuts and seeds in your diet. Instead of whole milk and milk products, opt for the low fat versions. If you eat non vegetarian foods, ditch the red meat and choose fish and lean meats instead.
Things to avoid include white and refined foods such as white flour (maida), white rice and sugar, junk food and poor quality fat, and lower quantities of tea, coffee and alcohol.
Start off with these and you will definitely feel lighter and healthier by this time next year. Good luck.
