Cholesterol is absorbed in the body in 2 different ways.

Our body produces cholesterol by itself. Our liver produces about 1000 milligrams of cholesterol every day. Liver, along with other cells, produce around 75 percent of the cholesterol in the blood.

The balance 25 percent cholesterol is derived from the various food items eaten by us, such as egg, meat, chicken, milk & dairy products.

The reasons for high cholesterol:
  • Regularly taking fat-rich food items
  • Eating excess meat
  • Obesity
  • Less physical exertion
  • Lack of physical exercise
  • Excess sleep
  • Habit of smoking
  • Mental tension
  • Habit of drinking (alcohol)
  • Diabetes & kidney/thyroid gland related diseases
  • Contraceptive tablets
  • Old age
If your parents have high cholesterol, there is a fair chance that you would have also acquired the same genes. Generally, there are no symptoms to indicate high cholesterol in the blood. So, high cholesterol is termed as the silent killer.

It may not be clearly said that the persons who are not so fat will not ave the complaint of high cholesterol in the blood. This can be confirmed only after tests. It is advisable for everyone over the age of 20 to get checked once in 5 years of the cholesterol content in the blood.

The cholesterol content in the blood is measure after a period of not eating anything for a period of 12 hours (generally, early morning sample). It is best to have lipoprotein profile.
