According to a new study, commonly used painkillers or Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that are taken at times of fever or pain have got a lot of side effects than what they have been believed for.
The study was conducted by Aarhus University. According to this, arthritis medicines, in specific, do a lot more harm than others. Older kinds of the same medicine comparatively carry more of dangerous factors for the heart.
The study lead author Morten Schmidt said that the market is already aware of the risk elements with different types of NSAIDs which are known as COX-2 inhibitors. They surge the risk of heart attacks and hence many such NSAIDs are called off from the market.
However, he says, there are a few old types of medicines being sold in the market still. Diclofenac, in particular has man risk factors associated with heart attack on par with the other medicines that are taken out from the market.
The author is worried because western world still uses a lot of these medicines. In fact, these are available in stores without medicines.
The study involved gathering all the researches made using NSAIDs on heart patients. For the very first time, the European Society of Cardiology has given recommendations to practitioners about what to consider before subscribing painkillers to patients.
Christian Torp-Pedersen, Aalborg University, Denmark stated that while prescribing medicines for NSAIDs, the practitioners need to make a thorough assessment of all the risk factors associated with the medicine including heart complications and bleeding. NSAIDs need to be made available at stores only with enough warning about the risk factors associated with it. Those with higher range of risk of cardiovascular diseases should not be prescribed with these medicines. The results of the stud were published in European Heart Journal.
