New antibiotic gel for ear infections

Parents are well aware of how hard it is to throw in drops of antibiotic when your tot is suffering from an ear infection. This tiresome duty will however soon get replaced with just one squirt of an exclusive ear drop.

Instead of taking a ten day course of oral antibiotic, merely a drop of this gel will suffice. When tried on animals (chinchillas), the researchers found that the antibiotic got coated in the eardrum and penetrated into the ear deep inside to do its job for one full week, and it helps in clearing the infection.

A senior researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School said that it is too challenging to make children take up antibiotic liquid many times a day. The researcher is studying novel ways of giving drugs. One of our aims is to deliver the dosage with ease. When tried on children, it is likely that it will aid in preventing antibiotic resistant infections. Many a times, parents tend to stop giving treatments to their young ones once they get better. This will however allow lingering bacteria to gain stronger again.

By giving the right medicine directly in the middle ear as one time dose, we are assured to have an effective treatment without much side effect.
