Nuts carry a whole lot of polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats both of which are friendly to your heart. They reduce LDL or bad cholesterol levels. They also act as a valuable source of phytosterols, a compound that promotes reducing blood cholesterol.

A detailed analysis involving 29 studies and 8,19,000 people found that eating a handful or 20 grams of nuts every day can reduce the risk of heart disease by 30 percent, and that of cancer and premature death by 15 percent and 22 percent respectively.

Nuts can also help with controlling appetite, thus preventing weight gain. Nuts also promote weight loss.

The study involved analyzing all kinds of tree nuts including peanuts, hazelnuts and walnuts all of which are technically legumes. These contain fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals including folate, vitamin E, magnesium and potassium.

Among all nuts, walnuts is the winner. They contain essential omega 3 fatty acids that is of great help for skin health. It is also rich in antioxidants as compared to other nuts, according to a study by the American Chemical Society.
