It has become an accepted trend use diapers for children. This especially applies during periods of travel when the children will be made to wear diapers.

However, most parents really do not know it is more harmful rather than beneficial.

The harms caused by diapers:
  • Diapers are made from synthetic fibres which may be allergic to child skin. Inflammation or reddening of the skin, dryness of the skin, itch, boils/polyps, change of skin colours may happen.
  • Tight diapers may not provide sufficient ventilation for the child’s body. As the moisture remains, there are possibilities for fungus formation.
  • If the poop/pee of the child remains in the diaper for long, the bacterias in them will cause itch and irritation to the child. It may even create infection in the urinary path. The child may cry frequently and may even refuse food.
  • Many chemicals are used in the manufacture of diapers – sodium polyacrylate, dioxin, phthalates, etc., for absorbing moisture, and some other chemicals for smelling good. These may create allergy for the child. Especially, diapers may lead to itch and boils/polyps in the thigh joint areas.
  • Diapers must be changed every 4 hours. However, many parents are not even our the child has pooped and allowed them to be in the same diaper for long periods. This will certainly lead to infection. Some diapers are administered with antiseptics – which are likely to harm the skin of the child.
  • If the children have the habit of passing urine in the diapers throughout the day, the children may not tell their urgency to pass urine. They will tend to pass urine as they assume to be wearing a diaper all the time or even may hold urine. This may even lead to regular wetting in the bed.
A guideline to use diaper - if you must:
  • Use only cotton diapers.
  • Before using the diaper, take a wet cotton cloth, wipe mildly on both the front and the interior of the diaper. Apply a little coconut oil on the child skin in the related areas. This will be healthy and will also prevent itch.
  • In case the child is allergic to diapers, you have to apply the allergic lotion or ointment before putting the diaper.
  • Ensure that you use the right diaper for the right age. Soft and thin diapers are the best.
  • Whenever changing diapers allow some time gap for the child to be in better ventilation for the concerned parts.
  • Instead of using diapers right through day and night, think of changing to using diapers only during nights.
  • It is even more preferable to use diapers only in case of travelling out.
  • In case diaper is wet, remove at once.
  • Do not reuse the diaper once used – if the child has not wet it.
  • Use diapers only till the child is 2 years old. After that, you can give potty training to the kid.
