Mammary glands present in the mammals like cows produce milk. This milk from the cows is a complete food for the children’s who are above the age of two. This is due to the presence of high quality proteins with 9 essential amino acids. Out of total 100 percent, 80% are casein protein and 20 % are whey protein. It slowly releases proteins at regular time intervals. The remaining whey proteins are digestible easily and highly absorbed protein plays important roles in building muscle mass plus in the repairing of body tissues and fighting against infections etc. The cow’s milk also has got carbohydrates and fats in fair balance and hence it is a wholesome meal. It is a complete food for persons of any age group. It must be noted that there are different breeds of cows like jersey, zebu, brown Swiss and Holstein-Friesian.

Some important benefits of consuming cow’s milk:

The potassium and calcium are present in rich amounts in the cow’s milk is known. These play their part in improving the health of teeth and bones. Fractures and other bone diseases are prevented by consuming the milk from cows. It is worthy to mention that cow’s milk is a major contributor of retinol (preformed vitamin A) and is a potent antioxidant in the diets of children.

It is well known that Choline is a important nutrient for acetylcholine synthesis which is a neurotransmitter. This acetylcholine is responsible for regulation of the mood, memory, intelligence. Hence the cow’s milk is regarded as a miracle drink for all age groups.

To fortify cow’s milk, vitamin D along with other nutrients could be added as vitamin D is not present naturally in cow’s milk. This vitamin D plays superb role in the bone health. Formation, growth and repair of bones are aided by vitamin D. One important point is vitamin D is essential in the absorption of calcium and overall immune function.

When the child consumes a cup of fortified cow’s milk then there would be reduced risk of osteoporosis, depression, chronic fatigue, muscle pain, hypertension and cancer.

Homogenisation:

It is important to mention here that homogenised cow’s milk is highly favoured by the kids and this keeps the nutrition intact. In this process the milk fat globules are reduced in size and dispersed uniformly through rest of milk. In this process the creamy layer forming on the top is prevented. It is well known that kids do not like the smell, taste and appearance of the cream. Hence this homogenised milk is favoured by the kids.

Overall growth and development of a child:

A child’s overall health is indicated by the physical development and those kids who consume cow’s milk grow taller than other kids who do not consume cow’s milk. This is a surprising scientific fact that has amazed many.

A study was conducted by some researchers regarding the effect of consuming cow’s milk by children. The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. As per the study it was clear that children of 2 to 6 years who consumed cow’s milk were taller than those who consumed plant based or other type of animal-milk beverages.

It was found that a 3 year old child who consumed 3 cups of cow’s milk in a day was 1.5cm talleler than a child of same age who consumed other types of milk. The healthy functioning of brain, nervous system and sleep-wake cycle are possible due to milk from the cows that are rich in vitamin B. The DHA levels are more favourable in kids drinking cow’s milk when compared to the kids drinking other types of milk. This is because of the low contents of LA or linoleic acid levels but has more favourable LA/ alpha-linolenic ratio. When we grow older, our bone mineral density increases is known. So the intake of cow’s milk could help us to keep up our strength.

Important precautions:

It is important to take care when boiling the milk. Milk should not be boiled for over 3 minutes as it would lose its nutrition through over boiling. Storing milk in plastic containers or microwaving them in plastic containers should be avoided as plastic containers are cancer causing or carcinogenic. To avoid getting contaminated, store milk in clean vessels only.
