Hematospermia in males - causes and treatments

How many of us know about Hematospermia issue or blood in the semen?

Men get anxious by seeing blood in their semen. This hematospermia is a condition and is caused mostly due to prostate biopsy. One important point is this blood in semen is not a serious health issue in males. This condition could happen in males below 40 years of age as well as in the males above 40 years of age.

Various symptoms of hematospermia are

Burning sensation or pain during urination, blood present in the urine, difficulty in emptying the urinary bladder fully, pain during ejaculation, high BP, fast pulse, discharge from male genitalia, swelling of male reproductive organ etc are the symptoms.

Various factors that are responsible for this condition in males are

Tumours:

It is worthy to note that more than 900 men were taken for the study, their semen with blood were analysed and 3 to 5% were found to have tumours in them. In most men their prostate was found to have tumour. This presence of blood in the semen could be due to testicle cancer, due to cancer in the bladder or other reproductive organs.

Infections and inflammation:

This could also cause blood in the semen. Infections and inflammation would be present in the semen producing organs tube or duct in the body and cause blood.

Medical procedures:

Not many are aware of the fact that medical procedures like vasectomy or any procedure related to urinary issues, haemorrhoids, radiation therapy etc could result in the blood in the semen of males. There is no need to worry much as the condition is just temporary.

Blockage in ducts and tubes:

Blood vessels could break due to the blockages in the tubes and ducts of the male reproductive organs. This could release little amounts of blood in semen.

Blood vessels damaged:

Blood vessels play an important role in the ejaculation of semen and any damage caused to these blood vessels could result in the blood in the semen. Sometimes damage to the tiny tubes carrying sperm could also lead to blood in the semen.

Health issues:

It is said that health issues like high BP, liver disease plus others like HIV, leukemia etc could be responsible for getting blood in the semen.

Tests and evaluation of blood in the semen:

Diagnosis of this hematospermia is important. It must be noted that the diagnosis is carried out by the doctors. The doctors enquire about the patient’s history plus his recent sexual activity. To detect any swelling or lump, the patient’s genitals are examined by the doctor. Rectum of the patient is also analysed and this is done to find out swelling or tenderness in the prostate.

There are few tests that a patient with this condition undergoes and these are

Analysis of the urine, prostate cancer test or PSA testing, ultrasound, MRI, CT scan etc. Sometimes a condom test is also done to know whether the blood in semen is coming from his sexual partner.

Treatment for this hematospermrmia condition:

If this blood in semen is caused due to infections then antibiotics are used. In case of inflammation being the cause, then anti-inflammatory medication is prescribed by the doctor.

Urology procedure like prostate biopsy could cause blood in semen and it usually disappears by itself after few weeks of time.
