Sometimes when we stand before a mirror we might have noticed few white patches on our tongue. Have you ever thought about what the white coloured patch on the tongue was?

It is known that papillae are finger like projections present on the surface of our tongue. Bacteria, debris and dead cells get lodged between inflamed or enlarged papillae and this causes white coloured patches on our tongue. There are various reasons for white patches on our tongue and these are dehydration, fever, diet low in roughage, breathing through mouth, excessive alcohol use, smoking, tobacco use etc. Though mostly white tongue is harmless but sometimes it also indicates a serious health condition in us.

Few common causes for white tongue:

Oral thrush:

White tongue in us could be due to oral thrush which is a fungal infection and Candida yeast could cause this oral thrush. When a person has got a weak immune system then that person is more prone of getting affected by oral thrush and finally would get white tongue.

Oral lichen planus:

Thick and white patches of skin on mouth and tongue might be due to oral lichen planus which is an inflammatory condition. It must be taken into account that white patches might be accompanied by painful gums, cheeks etc.

Syphilis:

The presence of white tongue in us could also be because of sexually transmitted disease or STD like syphilis. Mouth sores could be caused by syphilis when it is not treated. So be careful.

Leucoplakia:

It is a condition where thick white patch is seen on the tongue and smokers and drinkers would have white tongue in them due to leucoplakia.

How to prevent white tongue in us?

These are the different ways by which the white tongue issue could be prevented in us. Proper oral hygiene must be followed by us and it is the most effective way to avoid white patch. By brushing teeth two times in a day and flossing teeth regularly we could maintain proper oral hygiene. Our tongue must be cleaned well using tongue scraper.  By visiting dentist once in 6 months to ensure proper oral hygiene is one important way. White tongue could be avoided by using probiotics as these probiotics contain bacteria that are beneficial for our digestive system. Finally by intake of raw garlic the white tongue could be prevented as garlic could fight infections caused due to Candida.
