Do you know these side effects of consuming fenugreek?

In Indian cuisine fenugreek plays a significant role. Fenugreek is cultivated in Middle East, Asia is well known. It is amazing that fenugreek could be used as herb or as spice or as vegetable etc. This fenugreek belongs to family named ‘Fabaceae’ and is used for its flavour and also for its health benefits. Various health benefits that intake of fenugreek provides us are reduction of menstrual cramps, lowering appetite, good for liver and kidney health etc.

While many of us know about these above mentioned health benefits not many of us would be aware of the side effects or health issues got by intake of fenugreek.

Various health issues we could get by intake of fenugreek are

Loose motions or diarrhoea:

Some mothers and breastfeeding babies would get loose motions when they consume fenugreek. When the symptoms persist then it is advised to stop consuming fenugreek.

Hypoglycaemia:

This is also one important side effect caused due to fenugreek intake. The blood sugar levels get lowered and it could lead to issues like seizures etc in us. So be careful about consuming fenugreek.

Uterine contractions:

The point is intake of fenugreek could lead to uterine contractions in pregnant mothers and then lead to early labour. The presence of oxytoxin in fenugreek is responsible for uterine contractions.

Allergies:

For some people intake of fenugreek might not be as good as for the others. Just similar to chickpeas, peanuts etc intake of fenugreek could lead to allergic reactions. Various symptoms like rashes, hives, breathlessness etc could be present. Issues like nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing etc are also caused by fenugreek.

Loss of consciousness in children:

This is true. In certain children intake of fenugreek based tea has led to loss of consciousness. It is said that kids drinking fenugreek tea could have unusual body odour resembling maple syrup.
