Sometimes in some individuals, cancer could develop from the lining of the stomach and this is termed as gastric cancer. It is also known as stomach cancer. People having gastric cancer would show many symptoms like upper abdominal pain, heartburns, nausea, loss of appetite etc. There are also other symptoms like weight loss, skin yellowing, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing etc.

Till now it has been said that this gastric or stomach cancer could affect only those persons who are around 55 years of age. The shocking information now is the gastric cancer has been affecting the younger persons also and this was as per a research conducted by an undergraduate medical student.

Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research or SRIHER is a popular educational institute in Chennai and a final year MBBS student named Deeksha Muralidhar belonging to this institute analysed the records of as many as 177 patients for her study titled ‘Gastric Cancer in the Young’. She spoke about how off the cases 9.6 percent were below the age of 40.

She then explained about how these persons who had gastric cancer did not have any genetic reason but cancer was due to changes in the dietary habits and use of substance. On 28th and 29th of June 2019, Deeksha Muralidhar and 14 other medical students and one intern presented their research at the first International Conference of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of ASEAN that took place in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam.

Mr. S.M. Chandramohan who is the director, international programme for students, SRIHER, expressed his unhappiness regarding the presence of gastric cancer in those below 40 years of age and said it was a disturbing trend.

He spoke about how young people have poorly differentiated tumors. He explained about how in the young people showing symptoms gastric cancer was not suspected  as the first diagnosis unless someone in his/her family has got gastric cancer. Mr. Chandramohan concluded that in the younger people gastric cancer has an aggressive course. Information gathered is males get affected by gastric cancer more than females and the research study found that 58.8 percent men had gastric cancer in them.
