Why it is important to eat kohlrabi?

In many European countries we could come across a hardy annual vegetable related to the cabbage family. This vegetable is called as kohlrabi and is also a cruciferous vegetable. It is important to note that the colour of kohlrabi varies from purple to green to white etc. They could be eaten in raw form or cooked. Both root as well as leaves of kohlrabi could be consumed.

Kohlrabi has got many ingredients like dietary fibres, antioxidants, minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamins like C, A, K.

There are many health benefits of intake of this kohlrabi and these are

Lowers risk of cancers:

There are many potent phyto chemicals like isothiocyanates, sulforaphane etc present in kohlrabi and hence intake of this vegetable could help in reducing the risk of getting cancer. It is believed that intake of this kohlrabi reduces the risk of breast and prostate cancer.

Good for immune system:

This is also one important health benefit of consuming kohlrabi. The presence of vital nutrients helps in supporting our immune system. Kohlrabi has got vitamin B6 and this vitamin helps in protein metabolism and proper immune function. One more advantage is intake of kohlrabi could help in the development of RBC s in us and issues like anaemia is avoided.

Good for strength of bones:

Bones are very important for us. It is known that as we age our bones become weaker and would break easily. By consuming kohlrabi that is loaded with calcium, magnesium etc, our bone strength is improved.

Good for the eyes:

The presence of vitamin A in kohlrabi could prevent macular degeneration plus it could avoid or eliminate cataract etc in us.

Gut health gets better:

It must be noted that both soluble and insoluble fibres are present in kohlrabi. Intake of kohlrabi could help us to maintain cholesterol and blood sugar levels. The fibre present in kohlrabi has got healthy bacteria like bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. Gut health gets improved.

Reduces the risk of heart diseases:

These days many of us get affected by the heart diseases. Compounds like glucosinolates and isothiocyanates are present in this kohlrabi. It is revealed that these compounds could lessen inflammation and could make the blood vessels wider. Building up of plaque in the arteries is avoided. It was shown by a study that those who consumed cruciferous vegetables like kohlrabi had low risk of getting heart diseases in them.

Our metabolism gets spiked by the cardio exercises and it could lead to increase in our hunger levels. It is important to lift weights to counter this.  Point to be noted is when we gain muscle by lifting weights we actually burn more calories at rest.
