One of the important organs present inside the humans is lungs and lungs are involved in taking blood oxygen from the air and expelling carbon dioxide.

Some persons while climbing stairs or even while jogging at normal speeds etc might have felt breathless.  It is revealed that issues like COPD or asthma etc could lead to shortness of breath in us. Point is those who have these issues must check their lung capacity.

What is meant by lung capacity?

The total amount of air that our lungs could hold at a given time is called as lung capacity. It must be taken into account that as we grow older the lung capacity of us decreases. Lung problems could result in a decrease in lung capacity. It is important to note that the total lung capacity of males is more than that of females and the total lung capacity of an adult male is 6 litres of air.

An interesting piece of information is people who are taller and those who live at higher altitudes have larger lung volumes than those who are shorter and those who live at lower altitudes.

There are various ways by which the lung capacity could be increased. They are

By doing breathing exercises:

Lung capacity would be increased when we do breathing exercises. Exercises such as diaphragmatic breathing, pursed-lips breathing, pranayama etc could increase the lung capacity in us.

By doing cardio exercises:

The cardio exercises are good for the heart is well known. Many are not aware of the fact that cardio exercises are also good for lung capacity improvement. It is superb to note that doing cardio exercises for 30 minutes in a day could provide huge benefits for us. Lungs would be working harder in the cardio exercises and this would lead to an increase in the lung capacity.

By staying hydrated:

Just similar to how other parts of the body needs the proper intake of water, the lungs also need water. It must be noted that by staying hydrated the mucus lining in the lungs would remain thin and they would function better.

By staying in right posture:

It must be taken into account that lung capacity and posture are related to each other. Our lung capacity would decrease when we slouch while sitting. Lungs could get squeezed when we sit in an incorrect position. Hence it is important to sit straight.

By taking vitamin D:

It has been revealed that vitamin D consumption could increase the lung capacity of the people and these people were able to exercise for a longer time. Sun is an important source of this vitamin D is well known. We could also consume vitamin D rich foods such as cheese, soy milk, red meat, egg yolk etc.
