Foods that are bitter to taste are usually not preferred by us!!
These foods are rich in phyto-chemicals with superb antioxidant properties and lack of intake of these foods might lead to nutrient deficiency in us. Bitter taste of foods like citrus fruits is due to the presence of flavonoids in them. In the same manner the bitter taste of soyabeans is due to the presence of isoflavones in them. Presence of phenols in tea, red wines etc makes them taste bitter. It is revealed that essential nutrients could help us to avoid chronic diseases.
Truth is that bitter tasting foods are either overcooked or masked by adding some sweeteners so that they would taste less bitter. The healthy nature of these bitter foods gets lost in the process of making them more preferable to the customers.
These below mentioned bitter foods would lower or reduce the blood glucose levels in diabetics effectively.
Intake of bitter melon or karela:
One of the highly consumed bitter foods by the diabetic patients in Asia, India etc is bitter melon. Also called karela, this food has got anti-diabetic properties in them. By intake of bitter melons, managing blood glucose levels is possible.
Intake of curry leaves:
It is believed that by the intake of curry leaves having bitter taste the blood sugar levels would get lowered at a faster rate. This food would lower fasting as well as post meal blood sugars within 15 to 30 days.
Intake of green tea:
The blood sugar levels in diabetic patients would get reduced by the presence of catechins in green tea. The catechins have strong antioxidant properties is a known fact. It is advised to drink the green tea for a longer time to lower the risk of diabetes.
Intake of wood apple:
By consuming wood apples having bitter taste, the pancreas would get protected. It is said that damage caused due to streptozotocin on the pancreatic islet cells would get prevented. Diabetic must take this wood apple for 14 days to get their blood sugar levels controlled.
Intake of drumstick:
It is known that all parts of drumsticks like leaves, flowers, seeds etc have a great anti-diabetic potential. The blood glucose levels in the diabetics would get reduced by the presence of polyphenols like flavonoids, phenolic acids and quercetin etc in the drumstick.
Intake of aloe vera:
The glycemic levels in the pre-diabetics and those with type-2 diabetes could be improved by the intake of raw aloe vera that is bitter in t taste.
Intake of fenugreek seeds:
The blood glucose levels would be lowered when fenugreek seeds are consumed alone or in combination with medicines like metformin etc. It is known that fenugreek has got anti-diabetic effects.
