We all would have hiccups in our lives at some point of time. Some people would get hiccups often and the truth is that getting hiccups regularly could be annoying for a person. It is worthy to mention that mostly hiccups could be due to fast eating. Most of the time, hiccups would go away on their own after some minutes.
The shocking truth is that hiccups might also last for a longer time of 2 days etc. In such cases, the hiccups might be due to an underlying health condition like acid reflux or damage to CNS etc. Hiccups are termed as an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm and respiratory organs etc where glottis get closed suddenly leading to gulping sound.
A person would get non-stop or continuous hiccups due to these reasons.
Fast eating or eating too much:
The stomach would be forced to expand beyond its normal size when a person eats too much or eats too quickly. It must be noted that when the stomach expands then the diaphragm would be contracting sharply and this could lead to hiccups. The chances of getting hiccups would be reduced by chewing the food well. This is because of the fact that chewing food well would prevent air from getting trapped within food particles.
Swallowing air:
Hiccups could also be due to swallowing air that could lead to the expansion of the stomach. It must be taken into account that if a person has swallowed too much of air then burping would provide a solution. Swallowing air could occur when a person chews gum or smokes etc.
Acid reflux condition:
Sometimes, the acid present in the stomach would go back again to the throat or oesophagus etc. This is called an acid reflux condition. The acid reflux could lead to hiccups in a person.
Consuming too much alcohol:
By drinking too much alcohol, the lining of the stomach and oesophagus could get irritated. This could result in hiccups. So, please be careful.
Pregnancy:
There would be excess pressure on the diaphragm by the growing baby and this could lead to hiccups. There are chances available to avoid heartburn related hiccups during pregnancy by avoiding trigger foods, eating small and more frequent meals etc.
Stress:
When a person is under excess stress then he or she would hyperventilate. By this, some air might go to the stomach instead of lungs causing hiccups. Nerve pathways between brain and diaphragm when disturbed could lead to hiccups.
