Do you know what is called a silent thief of eyesight!

Our optic nerve can get damaged by a group of eye diseases or glaucoma. It must be noted that fluid would build up in the front portion of the eye leading to more pressure on the eye. Finally, the optic nerve would get damaged. It is a known fact that the optic nerve would transmit visual information from eye to brain. If left untreated, glaucoma could lead to loss of eyesight also. It is called silent thief of eyesight because the vision loss would occur slowly over a period of time.

It is important to note that by identifying glaucoma early it would be possible to take proactive measures to protect the eyesight. Reasons for glaucoma are family history, diabetic, intraocular eye pressure and steroid usage etc.

Early warning signs of glaucoma are

Pain and redness:

Point is that pain and redness are presenting signs of glaucoma but there are also few non-specific signs that would reveal the presence of other eye issues.

Coloured halos around lights:

When a person has glaucoma, they would see rainbow colours around lights and this would occur especially at night time.

Presence of high eye pressure:

High eye pressure can be found out during a routine check up. It must be noted that high eye pressure would occur without any pain.

Painless blurring of vision:

In some persons, blurring of vision could occur in one eye or in both eyes. This is another warning sign of glaucoma.

Treatments available:

There are few treatments available for glaucoma like using eye drops, laser therapy, surgery etc. Point is that surgery is a final option for the patients if eye drops and laser therapy don`t work.

Foods to avoid:

Patients with glaucoma must avoid foods like saturated fats containing foods or trans fatty acids based foods or foods with excess salt etc. In addition to these, the patents must avoid consuming caffeinated drinks etc.

Activities to be avoided:
