Drinking 3 to 5 cups of coffee daily helps to decrease the chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease. This is the new finding from a recent study done in Europe. According to this study, number of people aged above 65 who are likely to be affected with Alzheimer’s disease is going to increase by 2025 from 15.4 % to 22.4% of the total population in Europe.

It has been found that caffeine in coffee prevents to a certain extent the formation of neurofibrulary tangles and amyloid plaques in brain. These are the two main reasons for the development of Alzheimer’s disease in old age. In addition, caffeine reduces inflammation and prevents decaying of brain cells, especially in the areas of memory in brain.

Assistant professor in neuroepidemiology, Erasmus Medical Centre Rotterdam Dr. Arfam Ikram suggests that regular consumption of coffee over a lifetime can be definitely related to the reduction in developing Alzheimer’s disease in old age.
