Chikun Gunya is known to create unbearable joint pain. According to studies made on the disease, it is found that when it is left unattended or untreated, it may lead to severe consequence of prolonged pain for many years even after the fever goes off.
The study was conducted by National Institute of Epidemiology. According to the study results, around 80 per cent of Chikun Gunya affected individuals suffer with persistent arthralgia. These patients experience the joint pain for about 15 days of incidence of the illness. Following this, there exists the joint pain for more than about 2 years. This study was carried out after the outbreak of Chikun Gunya in 2006. About 403 patients from different places including Gowripet, Avadi, and other suburban areas of the city got affected. These patients were studied for over 30 months. According to the study results, structured guidelines need to be followed and the patient needs to be addressed depending on the phase of disease – acute or chronic.
According to one of the senior consultants in infectious diseases, he says the effect
of Chikun Gunya is debilitating. Though the symptoms are treated, the joint pains require use of steroid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
