The awareness of the importance of life insurance, which can be of immense benefit in the event of personal disasters, is not as high as it should be in our country.

This is especially so when we consider the poorer and middle-class sections of our society.

With this scenario, to facilitate this society to invest in insurance including life & accident risks, central government is all set to introduce a scheme.

The details about this proposed insurance plan:

‘Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jothi Bheema Yojana’ (Prime Minister’s Life Light Insurance Scheme) covers a payment of Rs. 2 lakh in the event of death of the policy holder.

The premium for this scheme is Rs. 330/- per year.

Anyone with a bank savings account can join this scheme.

However, if a person has more than 1 bank savings accounts, he/she can avail this benefit from one of the accounts only.

People between the age group of 18 to 50 can join in this scheme.

Another scheme, ‘Pradahan Mantri Suraksha Bheema Yojana’ (Prime Minister’s Insurance Policy covering accident risks) will help partly offset the economic setbacks encountered after accidents.

If the policy holder gets incapacitated in an accident, up to Rs. 2 Lakhs insurance is given.

If death occurs or if the person loses both eyes/hands/legs, a payment of Rs. 2 Lakhs will be made.

If the person loses 1 eye/hand/leg, a payment of Rs. 1 Lakh will be made.

For this health covering insurance, a premium of only Rs. 12/- a year is required.

The coverage is for 1 year and has to be renewed every year. Persons of age groups from 18 to 70 with saving bank accounts can join in this scheme.

The annual duration of both these policies is from 1st June, 2015 till 31st May, 2016.

The policy will be continued year after year.

It is quite simple to join these schemes.

Visit the bank in which you have savings account, obtain the forms for joining insurance policies, fill up & join.

The payment for both the policy schemes will be on auto-debit mode.

Hence, the annual premium will be taken automatically from the savings account.
