You know how we run to the doctor as soon as we develop a fever? Well, you don`t have to. Sometimes a fever is a good sign.

Before we get to why, let’s see when you SHOULD worry about a fever.

When an infant who is less than 4 months old has a fever. Although it may be nothing serious, there may be an infection that needs taking care of.

When your fever has lasted more than a week. This a sign of something more serious.

So why is a fever good? For one thing, studies have shown that the body’s immune system works very well when put to the test. Also, if the fever has been caused by an infection, doctors can find out the type of infection depending on the pattern of your fever. A fever may be your body’s way of telling you to slow down. You can catch up on rest when unwell. Another reason is that since your body’s temperature is on the higher side, there is lesser chance for infectious organisms to grow in it.

Having said this, make sure that you do take care of yourself whether you have a fever or not! While the fever itself may not be harmful, the reason behind it may be. An infection - if thats the reason - needs to be looked into immediately. Keep a keen eye out for unusual signs and visit your doctor if they persist.
