A study published in the journal Cell Metabolism has claimed that a diet to lose weight should be more low fat than low carb. The study was conducted by scientists at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in the US.

The study was conducted on 19 non diabetic men and women. All had a problem with obesity. The participants stayed at the clinical unit all the while during two extended visits. They all ate the same food and did the same activities. For the first five days of each visit, they ate a regular balanced diet. For the next 6 days, one group ate 30 per cent lesser calories with no carbs at all; the other group are 30 per cent lesser calories with no fat at all. During the second visit, the groups switched diets.

According to a researcher, Compared to the reduced-fat diet, the reduced-carb diet was particularly effective at lowering insulin secretion and increasing fat burning, resulting in significant body fat loss... The findings counter the theory that body fat loss necessarily requires decreasing insulin, thereby increasing the release of stored fat from fat tissue and increasing the amount of fat burned by the body... (The) data explained that that when it comes to body fat loss, not all diet calories were exactly equal.
