Scientists have claimed that hopping exercises may strengthen the bones and reduce the risk of fractures. These findings may help prevent and manage osteoporosis.
A study was conducted in which 24 men between the ages of 65 and 80 participated. This study was funded by a Medical Research Council interdisciplinary bridging award. The participants followed a programme of hopping exercises. These exercises were performed on just one leg and went on over a year. The participants were told not to make changes in their diet or other physical activities. After a year, CT scans were taken on both the legs. Bone mapping analysis was conducted by the National Osteoporosis Society.
Say the researchers, The bone maps show clear changes in bone, with localised adaptions at regions that may be important to reducing hip fracture.
