The brain is the most complex and delicate of all the organs in the body. Here are a few foods that help keep the brain sharp and lower the risk of conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer`s.

Consuming 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil helps keep a sharper brain as well as a healthier heart. Olive oil contains 15% saturated and polyunsaturated fat that is beneficial to these organs.

Citrus fruits contain flavanone that helps reduce the risk of dementia. Experts suggest that fruits such as oranges and grapefruit be added to the daily diet. Another food that can be added to your diet is nuts. Nuts are rich in mono saturated fats and Vitamin E. A helping of walnuts and almonds/ hazelnuts keeps the cognition abilities up to speed.

A portion of fish a week can keep Alzheimer`s at bay. Fish is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin D and iodine.

Good news for chocoholics! Two cups of hot chocolate a day can improve your brain skills. Cocoa solids have a compound called catechin which is good for the brain.

Berries are beneficial to the brain`s blood vessels because of compounds called anthocyanin. This compound is found in black and red grapes, blackberries, cherries, raspberries, strawberries, black currants and blue berries.
