A team of researchers are here with an all new way of detecting the risk of diabetes post-pregnancy.

Among the common troubles women face during their pregnancy period is gestational diabetes. In most cases, the diabetes would disappear post-delivery, but in few of them, women tend to develop higher risk of developing postpartum diabetes. Now, an accurate method of predicting the possibility of gestational diabetes to continue even after delivery. The method is developed by researchers at the Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen.

During the research, 110 women were found to develop postpartum diabetes. Various factors that play vital roles in postpartum diabetes are tested by a team headed by Anette-Gabriele Ziegler.

Among the key factors are Body mass index and genetic predisposition. Factors such as the need for treating the patient with insulin post-delivery and whether she would breastfeed her baby are to be considered.

Based on these parameters, a new point system was introduced by the researchers. This enables them to predict if a woman would develop postpartum disease or not. If there is a low-risk score, there was a 11 percent chance of developing postpartum diabetes in the following five years. In case of medium risk, the possibility was 29 to 64 percent while the same was 80 percent with highest risk scores.

Hinting on the new method, Ziegler says this is a very easy way that can be used in the hospitals in future. This can be an excellent way of predicting postpartum diabetes. This alerts both the patient and the doctor about the likeliness of postpartum diabetes with which diabetes checks can be performed closely tailored to the individual. The study results were published in Acta Diabetologica.
