A study conducted by professors at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) University has said that saffron helps in protection against liver cancer. The study, which was published in the journal Recent Patents on Anticancer Drug Discovery, was funded by Al-Jalila Foundation and the Terry Fox Foundation.

According to the research, the golden spice has a bio molecule that is beneficial for the liver. It works as a saffron based crocin, they say. Says one of the professors, The aims of this study were to examine the chemopreventive action of saffron`s main biomolecule - crocin - against chemically-induced liver cancer in rats and to explore the mechanisms by which crocin employs its anti-tumour effects. We assessed the effects of crocin on HepG2 cells viability by treating them with various concentrations of crocin. In addition, effects of crocin on cell cycle distribution of HepG2 cells were investigated.
