Acids found in beer may help fight cancer, say researchers

Researchers at the University of Idaho in the US have claimed that beer contains a key ingredient that could be used in treating cancer. The ingredient, called hops, has the ability to halt bacterial growth and disease. Hops is what gives beer its bitter taste. The study will be presented in the upcoming National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Hops contains humulones and lupulones. The scientists say that they hope to turn these acids into drugs. They are working on processes that may extract the compounds and creating them in a lab.

They say, (We are) very close to achieving this after a lot of trial and error. (We are) planning to collaborate with biologists and medical researchers to develop active agents for pharmaceuticals to treat cancers or inflammatory diseases from the beer-inspired compounds.
