On an average, there are about 300 million asthma sufferers across the world. This risk of extreme asthma attacks can get largely reduced by consuming Vitamin D supplements along with their usual asthma medicines, say new findings of review of international trial evidence.
This analysis involved trials in the United States, India, Poland, Britain, Japan, and Canada. The results state that the risk of severe asthma requiring hospital treatment can largely be cut down by consuming vitamin D by around 3 to 6 percent.
In spite of advising caution, the results of the study are exciting, says Adrian Martineau, a professor of respiratory infection and immunity, Queen Mary University of London.
This study involved just three trials from patients who suffered from very severe asthma conditions, he said. Trials from more of children and adults suffering from asthma are needed in order to figure out the beneficial effects of vitamin D in these patients.
He further added that the impact of Vitamin D is uncertain. It may be that it is effective only on those who have insufficient levels of Vitamin D and not on others with normal range of the vitamin. The investigation is furthermore taking place, he added.
