Increased use of hair dye increases breast cancer risk

Are you among those who very often make use of hair dye or hormonal contraceptives? If yes, you should stop doing it as it can largely increase the chances of breast cancer.
Sanna Heikkinen from the University of Helsinki in Finland and Finnish Cancer Registry studied the contribution of hormonal contraceptive and hair dye usage, and its association with the risk of breast cancer.
The most important risk factors of breast cancer are late age of first birth, lesser number of children, too much of alcohol consumption and sedentary lifestyle, says Heikkinen.
The self-reported survey of 8000 breast cancer patients and over 20,000 controls from Finland were studied. According to the study results, there was 32 percent increased risk of breast cancer among young women aging below 50 as compared to the others who do not use hormonal contraceptives.
The team also got involved in the amount of opportunistic mammography that has been common. Before age 50, over 60 percent of the participants had undergone mammography.
Women should be educated better about the harmful effects of opportunistic mammography. The risks involved are accumulation of radiation burden and effects of false findings.
