Theresa Greupner of Leibniz University Hannover in Germany says that mineral water as a source of calcium is a better, calorie-free alternative to dairy and milk products. There is increasing number of overweighing and obese people. So, it becomes naturally important to focus on reducing energy intake so as to promote other alternatives for meeting the demand for calcium beyond using milk and dairy products with high calories.
The study was funded by the Association of German Mineral Water Bottlers. In the study, human body was observed about how well calcium gets absorbed from 5 different kinds of products each having 300mg of calcium. This included 3 types of mineral water rich in calcium sources, and calcium supplement and milk. The study involved 21 men and women. No difference in calcium absorption was studied in these 5 sources. The study results were put up on the Journal of the American College of Nutrition on 19th June.
There was no interruption of other minerals present in water when it comes to calcium absorption. There is a list of mineralization on the labels of most mineral waters. When there is high amount of calcium, the water will serve as a better source of calcium.
