You might wonder how dental health and other health issues in us are related but the shocking fact is these two are connected with each other. Most of us take so much care about our health. We follow many ways to keep ourselves fit and healthy to be free from many health issues. There are many who do not care much about their dental health. We forget to take care of our gums and teeth etc and as a result of that bacteria builds up. This could lead to many dental problems like tooth decay plus many gum based diseases like mouth ulcer, gingivitis, tooth mobility etc in us. It is important to mention that dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common factors responsible for the loss of teeth.
These are the different health problems that we could get due to poor dental health.
Diabetes:
Don’t be surprised to know that poor dental health is related to diabetes in us. It is said that when the mouth is inflamed it reduces the body’s ability to control the blood sugar levels. The presence of high insulin in diabetic people makes it difficult for them to process sugar. When the blood sugar levels increase then gum infections occurs in us.
Cardiovascular diseases:
People these days have cardiovascular diseases in them and many lose their lives. The studies have shown that 91% of people having heart disease have got periodontal disease when compared to 66% of people without heart disease. Inflammation in blood vessels occurs when bacteria in plaque and calculus deposits in mouth travel to the bloodstream. This results in increase of heart attacks and strokes etc.
Endocarditis:
Majority of us would not be aware of endocarditis issue which is an infection in the inner linings of the heart chambers and heart valves. Brushing the teeth or other oral based activities that could lead to gum bleeding is a serious issue as millions of bacteria and other germs move from mouth and enter bloodstream and travel to heart and finally get attached to damaged heart valves.
Respiratory infections:
This is another health issue that could occur due to poor dental health in us. The bacteria present in our mouth are associated with the lung disease. Studies have shown that some changes in the bacteria in the mouth preceded the development of pneumonia.
Dementia:
It is said that poor dental health could lead to dementia in us. When gums are inflamed by infections substances are released from the gums and these could kill the brain cells and could result in memory loss. Gingivitis could also lead to Alzheimer’s disease in us.
Infertility in women:
We hear many news regarding women not able to conceive etc these days. It is a true that poor dental or oral health could also lead to infertility in women. A woman with poor dental health would take longer time to conceive when compared to women with good dental health.
Erectile dysfunction or ED in men:
It is revealed that poor dental health increases the risk of erectile dysfunction in men and chronic periodontal disease could make men prone to ED morore.
Digestive problems:
Most of us know that acid reflux and constipation could cause digestive issues in us. Not many are aware of the fact that gum diseases due to poor dental health could also lead to digestive problems in us.
