We would have heard our mothers and grandmothers mentioning that somebody misses us badly whenever we got a gulping sound from our mouth.

This sound is called as hiccup and the truth is we all would have got hiccups in our lives.

It is important to mention that hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm and respiratory organs. This takes place with sudden closure of glottis with characteristic gulping sound.

There are few reasons for hiccups and these are eating too much, eating too fast, eating spicy foods, intake of alcohol etc. Hiccups mostly go after few minutes.

There are few foods that must be taken to get relief from hiccups.

Honey intake:
It must be noted that vagus nerve plays a role in controlling the actions of digestive system in us. It is believed that by consuming honey the vagus nerve gets calmed. This would break the continuity of hiccup reflex. Finally, hiccups stop.

Vinegar intake:
Vinegar is nothing but an aqueous solution of acetic acid and is got by fermentation of ethanol. By resetting the involuntary movements of the diaphragm, the sore compounds present in the vinegar relieve hiccups. It is revealed that the sour taste of vinegar would keep us distracted while the muscles involved are given time to reset.

Sugar intake:
The sugar is grainy in nature and this graininess irritates the oesophagus, stimulating the vagus nerve. This would cause interference in the involuntary reflux. In the end, hiccups would have vanished as the resetting of nerves takes place.

Peanut butter intake:
Vagus nerves react differently when peanut butter is consumed. It is worthy to note that our body digests the peanut butter slowly and this slow process of digestion changes breathing and swallowing. The hiccups get eliminated in the end.

Lemon intake:
When lemon is consumed then the high acidic content disrupts the oesophagus and distracts the vagus nerve. The contractions get reset. It is said that by sucking a lemon wedge for some time our hiccups would go easily.

Choclate powder intake:
It is brought out that the rich taste of chocolate powder would submerge the vagus nerve and informs the brain to stop the involuntary movement. By this, feel good sensation would be focussed. As a result, we would get relief from hiccups.

Hot sasauce intake:
This is also one effective food that would help us to get relief from hiccup issue. It must be taken into account that the heat and burn are distracting enough to turn the body’s focus on the burn rather than the process of hiccups.

Chewing dill seeds:
It is said that teaspoon of dill seeds when chewed would eliminate hiccups. The important point here is chewing would stimulate the vagus nerve to stop hiccups.
