The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the lives of many in Chennai. It is said that the sedentary lifestyle coupled with other issues like stress, anxiety, unemployment, lockdown etc have increased the gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD in Chennai. This GERD is more prevalent now in the youngsters and there is also some news about the relapse of GERD.
It was revealed by Dr. M. Srinivas, department of gastroenterology and Endosonography, Gleneagles Global Health City that most pre-pandemic cases were from IT professionals. The work from home situation has increased the number of cases with GERD. He was of the view that around 80% in Chennai would have this GERD but just 40% come for treatment.
Kauvery Hospitals, senior consultant surgeon, department of gastroenterology, Dr. Muralidharan stated that the age of the patients who come for treatment has come down. Fact is that this GERD mostly affects the elderly persons but the shutdown conditions etc have brought in a younger demographic suffering from binge eating and increased stress.
Mostly, the patients who come for their treatment are new but there are few who come for treatment due to relapse of this issue. Weight gain and eating habits are responsible for this GERD issue in the younger persons. The worsening of conditions has been witnessed in those who had relapse of this health issue. The presence of lower esophageal infections has been causing issues.
There are few patients having issues in their stomach linings now due to the dietary habits along with the condition.
