For a long time, there has been a belief that only raw uncooked food could lead to food borne illness in us.
The shocking piece of information is that even cooked food when not stored properly could result in food borne illness in us. It is worthy to note that food borne illness could lead to food poisoning. Various sins of food poisoning are diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, dehydration etc. Once cooked food becomes contaminated it is not safe and good to eat the food. It must not be forgotten that recently, FSSAI or Food Safety and Standards Authority of India mentioned in twitter about how it was a myth that cooked food can’t cause food borne illness.
By these ways cooked foods could become contaminated. So, take care.
Not stored properly:
This is one important way by which cooked food could become contaminated. Point to be noted is that all cooked and left over food must be refrigerated below 5 degrees Celsius within 2 hours.
Improper container for storage:
Sometimes, foods are prepared on a contaminated surface or equipment and are stored in non-food grade utensils. This could also turn cooked foods to contaminated foods.
Non practise of good hygiene:
To prepare food in the little available time or in a hurry, sometimes those who are preparing do not follow good hygiene. This could lead to foods getting contaminated.
Cross contamination:
When the cooked food gets cross contaminated with the raw food then there are chances that the cooked food would become contaminated food.
Things to follow to prevent cooked foods getting food contaminated are
It is important that we must make sure that we wash our hands before we start cooking and eating to avoid getting diseases. Once the food is cooked, then we must cover the foods properly. The kitchen surfaces on which the food is prepared must be cleaned well before and after preparing food. Do not consume raw foods because harmful bacteria present in them could affect the stomach. To avoid food poisoning, we must eat properly cooked foods and fresh foods only. It is essential to wash everything that we buy from the market and this must be done before cooking.
It was brought out by a famous nutritionist that we must use salt water to wash vegetables such as cauliflower, spinach, broccoli etc. By this process, we would be able to remove the harmful bacteria.
