Are you having cravings for a particular food? What does it indicate?

It is always a challenge to control our food cravings for fatty and junk foods when we are in the weight loss process. These foods would tempt us to a huge extent and finally we might lose our goal of losing weight and consume these foods. Those persons who have got control would be able to achieve success in shedding their excess weights. It is essential that we must know about food cravings. Having intense desire for a particular food is termed as food craving.

Both mental as well as physical factors are responsible for cravings for foods. There are also chances that cravings for food could be due to an underlying health condition. Not many of us would know that lack of certain nutrients could also trigger food cravings in us. Those with food cravings would feel as though they might not be able to satisfy their hunger without eating a particular food.

What cravings for these common foods indicate:-

Cravings for chocolates:
Many of us have got cravings for chocolates. It is often said that eating chocolates is unhealthy and would lead to weight gain due to its excess sugar content. It must be taken into note that magnesium present in chocolates would make us crave for chocolates. In other words, if we crave for chocolates then it is actually for the magnesium we are craving for. For more than 3000 biochemical reactions in us, magnesium is necessary. Our nervous system would get relaxed when we consume magnesium. It is possible for us to manage cravings for dark chocolates (with magnesium) by consuming other magnesium rich foods like almonds, cashews etc.

Cravings for chips and salty snacks:
It is important to mention that chips and salty snacks are rich in sodium content. Fact is that our body needs sodium to conduct nerve impulses and for contracting and relaxing muscles.  High intake of sodium might lead to blood pressure and low intake could balance the water and minerals ratio in us. Dehydration is often indicated by cravings for sodium. To balance sodium levels, we must eat more food or drink more water etc.

Cravings for fatty foods:
Our body’s need for essential fatty acids is shown by the cravings for excessive fat loaded foods and junk foods etc. It is true that fatty foods are rich in fats and are unhealthy and would make us put on weight. In fishes, flax seeds, walnuts, sunflower seeds etc, there are healthy fatty acids that would help to make cell membranes, improve skin quality and balance hormone levels in us. By eating more healthy fat based foods, we would be able to overcome fatty foods cravings.

Cravings for red meat:
It must be noted that when we crave for red meat then it means that we are actually cravings for iron. This could be because our body could be running low in iron due to poor absorption or low iron intakeke. To avoid red meat cravings, we could eat more iron based foods like spinach, pumpkin seeds, fishes like turkey etc.
