How eating red rice every day would be highly beneficial for us?

Considered as a healthy alternative to white rice, red rice is widely consumed by many in Kerala and it is said that a full meal called ‘Sadhya’ is incomplete without red rice. Red rice is also known as matta rice. What gives the rice the red colour is due to the presence of anthocyanins. The fact is that the bran layer of the rice has got anthocyanin.

The nutritional value of red rice is very high. The red rice is rich in fibre content and hence it is good for those with diabetes. There are also other ingredients in red rice such as iron, calcium, potassium etc. Different varieties of red rice that are available in Kerala are rosamatta or matta, kattamodan, kairali, bhadra, rakhtasali etc. The matta variety retains both bran as well as endosperm and hence it has a chewy taste. It takes more time to cook matta varieties of red rice when compared to other varieties.

Various reasons why red rice consumption is good for the health are

Controls diabetes:
The insulin level in us would get regulated by intake of red rice. It is known that red rice has a low glycemic index and this would help in controlling blood sugar levels etc.

Controls asthma:
The pulmonary functions would be controlled due to the presence of magnesium in the red rice. In addition, oxygen circulation in the body would become better. By this, asthma problems would be controlled.

Improves oxygen absorption:
The iron present in the red rice plays an important role in the oxygen absorption and circulating oxygen to every tissue and cell. Truth is that improved oxygen absorption could result in improved mood and energy levels etc.

The red rice is high in fibre content and this would help in digestive functions. Intake of red rice would help in the bowel movements. Issues like constipation could be avoided.

It must be noted that red rice intake would improve skin health. This is mainly due to anthocyanins in red rice that would delay the signs of premature aging in us. The presence of vitamins, zinc, iron etc would nourish the skin.
