The University of Eastern Finland conducted a study on Vitamin D levels in children. The research reveals about the significant role played by intake of milk coupled with enough vitamin D supplements and enough of physical activity.
Researchers stress on the fact that the bone strength of children largely rely on adequate levels of vitamin D. The vitamin will also help in bringing down the risk of several chronic health ailments. This research was population-based and throws light on well-being and good health of children and adolescents. The results of the study were issued in the British Journal of Nutrition. The study involved assessing 512 children of age between 6 and 8 who were indulged in baseline measurement between 2007 and 2009, representing the entire population of children of their age group.
Blood samples extracted from these children during autumn season showed high levels of vitamin D. Those in northern latitudes do not have enough exposure to sun which makes it hard for them to maintain vitamin D level during winter.
The study adds that more than 80 percent of children did not take sufficient vitamin D via food or vitamin supplements as recommended.
As per recommended levels, children need to consume 2.5 to 3 glasses of dairy milk rich in vitamin D and at least two to three servings of fish weekly. Furthermore, consuming spreads based out of vegetable oil rich in vitamin D is necessary too. Regular outdoor exercise is certainly a must-do factor in children.
