Much like other sectors, the civil sector has also been affected by the Coronavirus infection pandemic is a well known fact. It must be remembered that in February 2020 Chennai airport had 250 departures and arrivals every day. The shocking piece of information is that now the air traffic has come down by 50percent in this airport.
On an average, 21000 to 22000 passengers travelled everyday and this was as per some officials belonging to AAI. They pointed out that the passenger traffic as well as the number of flights handled by Chennai airport has been stagnant for a while now. Point is that in the months of March and April due to examinations etc traffic doesn’t increase.
Many now do not want to take up travel at this point of time due to rise in the Covid-19 cases. The officials were of the view that states like Maharashtra and Karnataka have also restricted people from entering. Information is that there is now no huge drop in the air traffic and it will be there till Coronavirus situation improves. It is worth mentioning that in 2020 TN government issued restrictions on the number of flights that could be operated at the Chennai airport.
The Chennai carport was allowed to operate any number of flights a few months back as the restrictions were lifted. It was later highlighted by an official that the number of flights cannot be increased due to the lack of demand. He concluded that when airlines want more flights to be operated then permission would be given.
