Posted on: 28/Apr/2025 10:29:41 AM

Chennai Metro Rail will start trial runs on the 9.1-km elevated stretch between Poonamallee and Porur on Monday, April 28, 2025. This is part of the ₹63,246-crore Phase II project, which aims to launch driverless train operations later this year.

The stretch features 10 stations: Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee, Mullaithottam, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyyapanthangal, Thellaiyagaram, Porur Bypass, and Porur Junction. This corridor falls under Corridor 4 (Light House to Poonamallee via Porur) and will be the first section to open under Phase II.

Earlier trial runs on the 3.5-km stretch between Poonamallee and Mullaithottam were conducted successfully. This upcoming trial will operate on the upline track, with an expected average speed of 35–40 kmph, while the downline track is set to be ready by early June.

During the trials, various systems such as braking, air-conditioning, acceleration, track alignment, and overhead equipment will be tested thoroughly to ensure a smooth and safe passenger experience.

Once operational, this stretch will improve connectivity for residents in areas like Poonamallee, Iyyapanthangal, and Porur, with full network integration expected upon extension to Vadapalani next year.
