Various health conditions that can cause drooling or sialorrhea while sleeping during the night!!

Do you drool while sleeping during nights? If yes, there is no need to worry!!

In accordance with the circadian rhythm, the production of saliva fluctuates. As a result of this, drooling or sialorrhea is a common issue while sleeping. Truth is that drooling would occur while sleeping inspite of the saliva production reducing in the night. There are several reasons for drooling and these are intake of certain medicines, allergies, heartburns, swollen adenoids etc.

Health conditions that can result in drooling are

Sleep apnea:
Drooling can be due to sleep apnea. Here, breathing would stop in some persons while they are asleep. Other symptoms of sleep apnea are loud snoring, fatigue during the day, choking sounds etc. It is essential to consult a doctor for this sleep apnea issue and get it treated.

Allergies and infections etc:
If a person has an allergy or an infection, then his or her body would produce excess saliva to remove the toxins. Point is that seasonal allergies in us would also make us drool while we sleep. There are possibilities of getting an allergy by means of mold, pollen from grass, weeds, trees etc.

Neurological conditions:
Persons with certain neurological conditions in them would produce excess saliva in their mouths or drool while sleeping. Brain damage, strokes, stopped flow of blood to the brain etc would result in drooling. Those with cerebral palsy would also drool while sleeping.

Gastroesophageal reflux disorder or GERD:
Persons who have GERD problems, their stomach contents would reflux back into the tube as lining of the oesophagus would be damaged. It must be noted that GERD would lead to dysphagia or trouble swallowing and a lumpy kind of feeling in the throat.

Sinus congestion and respiratory infections etc:
Our sinuses would get inflamed when we have colds, allergies etc. It is known that sinuses are hollow air spaces inside the bones surrounding the nose. As a result, there would be blockage and drainage and we would find it uncomfortable. It is noteworthy that the leakage could manifest as drooling.
