The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) launched the `Zero is Good` campaign on Tuesday, aiming for zero accidents on August 26. This ambitious goal is part of a broader effort to address Chennai`s high accident rates, as the city frequently ranks among the top 10 for fatal accidents in India.

At the campaign`s launch at the MTC central depot on Pallavan Salai, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R. Sudhakar acknowledged the challenge but expressed cautious optimism. He emphasized the need for community involvement, drawing inspiration from IIT-Madras’s Centre of Excellence for Road Safety and leveraging Chennai`s enthusiasm for positive change.

MTC Managing Director Alby John highlighted recent safety improvements, including retrofitting buses with rear-view cameras and providing driver training. IIT-M Professor Venkatesh Balasubramaniam, a key campaign supporter, expressed hope that Chennai could set a precedent for road safety in India.
