Chennai Metro Achieves Record Passenger Milestone: 35.53 Crore Riders Since 2015
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has achieved a remarkable milestone, with 35.53 crore passengers traveling on its trains from its inception on June 29, 2015, to December 31, 2024.
In 2024 alone, the Metro witnessed unprecedented patronage, with 10.52 crore passengers using the service, marking the highest annual ridership to date.
Year-wise Passenger Data:
- 2015-2018: 2.80 crore passengers
- 2019: 3.28 crore passengers
- 2020: 1.18 crore passengers (affected by COVID-19 lockdowns)
- 2021: 2.53 crore passengers (partial COVID-19 impact)
- 2022: 6.09 crore passengers
- 2023: 9.11 crore passengers
- 2024: 10.52 crore passengers
The substantial growth in ridership highlights the increasing reliance on Chennai Metro as a crucial public transport lifeline.
To enhance convenience, CMRL offers a 20% discount on all ticketing options, including Metro Travel Cards, mobile QR code tickets, group tickets, and Q.R trip passes. Passengers can book tickets through the WhatsApp Ticketing System (+91 83000 86000), Paytm, PhonePe, and the NCMC Card.
