Father of angioplasty in India, the doctor who revolutionised heart care in India, Dr. Mathew Samuel Kalarickal has passed away in Chennai on Thursday at the age 0f 77.
It must be recalled that this cardiologist was the man behind the development of interventional cardiology and in the 1980s itself he introduced advanced angioplasty techniques and has treated many patients successfully.
At a time when patients were scared of undergoing time consuming heart surgeries, Dr. Mathew Samuel did amazingly and has saved many precious human lives with the minimally invasive treatments for coronary heart disease. This doctor made his presence felt as a top class cardiac surgeon for 4 long decades and has been a mentor to hundreds of cardiologists. He also held leadership positions in many hospitals including the highly famous Apollo Hospitals in Chennai.
Born in the state of Kerala, Dr. Mathew Samuel did his MBBS from the popular Kottayam Medical College in Kerala and post graduation from the highly prestigious Stanley Medical College in Chennai. He then went to Europe and USA for training and came back to India. Important piece of information is that his accolades include Padma Shri Award and B.C. Roy Award. Rest in peace sir!!
