On 11th May 2021, the lockdown was intensified in TN and the number of fresh Covid-19 cases has been decreasing from 22nd of May onwards. Now, more number of cases are getting reported in the west and central regions of TN. In this scenario, the TN government might either intensify the lockdown or continue lockdown in tier-2 cities plus in the smaller towns.
Point is that the intense lockdown or its continual might affect the industrial belts located in the above mentioned places in TN.
On 11th May, around 6000 cases were reported from 8 western districts in TN and now these districts report nearly 10,000 cases per day. This has made many worried now. The region has witnessed 73% increase in the number of fresh cases in the last 20 days. The Coimbatore region alone was not contributing to the rise in the number of cases.
It is shocking to note that the number of cases from neighbouring districts of Salem, Tirupur and Erode have doubled now. On 11th May, Tiruppur and Erode reported 925 and 584 cases but on 1st June the number of fresh cases from Tirupur and Erode were 1338 and 1653 respectively. When compared to the 10% share of new cases on 11th May from Tirupur, the share from this region has increased now to 14%. The share from Nilgiris has doubled and the share from Namakkal has reached 10percent.
Industries and industrial clusters have been responsible for 70% of the Covid-19 cases. This was mentioned by Dr, Ramesh Kumar, former deputy director of public health.
